Jihadis trapped in Syria are still capable of carrying out attacks across Europe

ISIS jihadis who can’t leave Syria can still wreak HAVOC in Europe

Brett McGurk, special presidential envoy for the global coalition against ISIS, claims “terrorist combat units” intent on wreaking havoc are no longer able to leave the group’s de facto Syrian capital Raqqa via Turkey, for fear of being recognised and captured.

He said: “Not too long ago, what they [ISIS] would do is plan a terrorist attack in Raqqa, they would train a unit – kind of a terrorist combat unit – they would then infiltrate out… and go conduct an attack such as in Paris or in the Brussels airport.“That’s what they used to do, and they were developing that capacity. They cannot do that anymore.”
As they continue to retake ground from Islamic State, the US-led coalition is gathering intelligence to try to track down returnees, with a database of 19,000 names of suspected members of the terrorist organisation. The information, which has been gathered from mobile phones and address books, has been passed to Interpol in the hope of pinning down former fighters and sympathisers.Mr McGurk said: “If there’s somebody that fought in Syria and happened to have gotten out and in a routine border stop or routine search, routine traffic stop, they can actually be identified.”Around 40,000 individuals from 110 countries are thought to have travelled to Syria, mostly via Turkey, to join ISIS.

ISIS uses radicalised Westerners to carry out their atrocities

The information comes after alarming details of planned attacks were revealed by an ISIS militant captured by Kurdish troops. The apprehended fighter gave details of the units trained to carry out attacks on European soil and warned of future suicide bombings. He added every European who crossed into Syria was given the opportunity to join the al-Kharsa Brigade – an organisation which offers a seven-month training programme, including bomb construction and endurance. He went on: “It is very hard… If 20 start the training, only five finish it. Then after that they go back to Europe and attack.”

Speaking to the Sunday Times, the unnamed jihadi said the al-Kharsa Brigade was still active as of February this year, and further attacks could be expected.

He claimed: “They will make more suicide attacks in Europe because the coalition is bombing them a lot.”With the need to leave Syria removed, ISIS uses radicalised Westerners to carry out their atrocities instead.

According to the French interior minister, 271 people – 217 adults and 54 minors – had returned home to France from Iraq and Syria over the past 18 months, having initially fled to join ISIS.Of those, around 20 per cent were women, adding to fears that more radicalised females may attempt to return from Islamic State controlled territory in the coming months.Minister Gerard Collomb told Le Journal du Dimanche that the risk of another terror attack in France remained “very high”, adding: “Our security services have foiled seven attempted attacks since the beginning of the year.“The ‘returnees’ are automatically placed under surveillance by the Paris prosecutor and a number of them are currently in detention.”

He claims that the threat of attack comes not only from warzones in the Middle East, but also from radical Islamists within France, who are directed remotely by ISIS, adding that these terrorist no longer need to leave their Syria to cause destruction.Mr Collomb added that the threat of attack would remain in place even if Islamic State members could never leave Syria.
