Gender-divided swimming lessons in municipal schools raises question marks
At the Broängs school in Botkyrka, one of Sweden’s most immigrant municipalities, it has been decided to segregate the high school pupils’ swimming lessons from the Autumn Term.

The rise in women-only swimming hours has been promoted as offering a safe space for women and girls who may not be comfortable with showing their bodies in swimwear, or who hold conservative beliefs rooted in religion.
It follows reports of sexual attacks in swimming pools by migrant men across Europe, though the scheme is not specifically in reaction to the assaults.
The introduction of gender-segregated hours for religious reasons has sparked a fierce debate in Sweden and has been criticized by the government.
Last Monday, information was sent to pupils in the seventh grade that the boys and girls that in future, would have swimming lessons at different times. The teaching of the lessons would take place at different times for each group of boys and girls.
One parent, who wishes to remain anonymous , told Sveriges Radio, ” It’s an ordinary Municipal School that my child attends and the curriculum clearly states that you should not have segregation of the sexes.
I feel this policy of segregated swimming lessons has not been properly thought out and comes across as rude to ordinary Swedish people who think that our children should be segregated like this.
According to the school’s principal Magdalena Eberhardsson, the decision is based on the fact that some students, mostly girls, are not comfortable to show themselves to others in the swimming pool .
She said that after the segregation of the sexes more girls have come forward to participate in swimming lessons.
“We chose to segregate swimming lessons as we wanted more pupils to participate ” she said..
“Of course we can discuss this at school and listen to Parents who think we should have done things differently” says Magdalena Eberhardsson
