“We can not talk about the Christmas market, but just about a winter market. This is not just a totally crazy decision, it also goes against who we are, “says Pol Van Den Driessche from the local opposition party N-VA.
The annual Christmas market is a historic tradition and is for everyone whether one is religious or not and it is part of the city’s culture, adds Van Den Driessche, who makes clear that he does not want to blame this ill form of tolerance.
Bruges has a very beautiful and old tradition in terms of Christmas. Whether you are religious or not, it is part of our culture. I do not want to give in to this foolish form of ‘tolerance’. ”
Muslim residents associate the decision point out that Belgian norms and values are eroding, culture disappears and traditions change names – but at the same time they must respect Ramadan and other imported Muslim celebrations.
According to the winter market organizer Pieter Vanderyse, the decision was made to make it “more neutral” for all.
Even elsewhere in Belgium, like Brussels and Antwerp, the same changes have been made.
